Join Abby for this once-per-month 90-Minute class on the Rocket. Also known as Progressive Ashtanga, the Rocket was developed by Larry Schultz during the 1980s after spending many years studying traditional Mysore Ashtanga with its founder, Pattabhi Jois. Mysore Ashtanga is a highly-structured set series of postures that is the basis for all Vinyasa and Power Yoga as we know it today. In traditional Mysore-style Ashtanga, students can only proceed to the next posture in the series if they have mastered the one before it - but Larry believed that all students should be able to try all poses, and thus began this unique yoga style.
The Rocket combines and restructures the foundational principles from Primary and Intermediate Series of Ashtanga (even weaving in a few from 3rd and 4th Series!) - but allows practitioners to modify and explore postures they wouldn't have been permitted to do in a linear Mysore-style practice. This playful, dynamic nature is what defines The Rocket. Why the name? Larry Schultz traveled on tour with the Grateful Dead as their personal yoga teacher. The band's guitarist, Bob Weir coined the name "The Rocket" when he told Larry that his unique and unnamed style "gets you there faster!”
In this 90-Minutes, Abby will take you through a full Rocket practice. This will be a highly vigorous practice including options for inversions and arm balances - experience with yoga is recommended.
